Beginning his career with the film ‘The Sundowners’ at the age of 17, he was burdened with the expectation of becoming another great actor like his father and uncles. In the late 1960s, however, news stories about his erratic drunken behaviour began to emerge, and he made fewer film and television appearances. Midway through the 1970s, when he stopped working, he hit rock bottom, and his life deteriorated annually thereafter. In 2003, his daughter Drew Barrymore cared for him in his final days before his 2004 death from cancer.

John Drew Barrymore Early Life

John Drew Barrymore was born in a glitzy environment in Los Angeles on June 4, 1932, to the American film star John Barrymore and his wife, Dolores Costello. John’s parents divorced when he was an infant, and his mother was awarded custody. Although the Barrymore family had been in the acting business for decades prior to his birth, Dolores was aware of the negative aspects of the film industry and did not want her son to follow in the footsteps of his alcoholic father. As a result, when John expressed an interest in pursuing a career in acting, his mother discouraged him and advised him to pursue a different path.

His mother sent him to St. John’s Military academy to keep him as far away from acting as possible. He became a rebellious adolescent who always desired to do something exciting with his life, and he was extremely committed to pursuing a career in film. He admired his father and uncles, and by the time he was a senior in high school, he was acutely aware of his family’s legacy and was confident that he would find success in the film industry.

When he was in college, he tried his hand at theatre, but as an eccentric, self-assured young man, he did not begin with small roles, as most actors do in their early stages, but instead jumped right into the leading roles without any prior experience. It led to ‘cold feet,’ and he ended up abandoning most of his plays in the nick of time. This humiliated his aunt Ethel Barrymore, who encouraged him to finally make his stage debut, which he later recalled as the most difficult thing he had to do up to that point.

However, his antics did not spare those who gave him a second chance while others turned their backs.
