NASA’s Experience

Kalpana Chawla was chosen by NASA in 1994, and she joined the 15th group of astronauts in 1995 as an astronaut participant at Johnson Space Center.She was assigned to the Astronaut Office of the EVA/Robotic Computer Branch as a crew representative for technical issues after a year of training and evaluation.Among his responsibilities were robotic situational awareness displays and testing Space Shuttle Control Software in the Shuttle, as well as controlling software at the Avionics Integration Laboratory.

Kalpana Chawla was named Mission Specialist and Prime Robotic Arm Operator on STS-87 in November 1996.He was appointed Crew Representative for Shuttle and Station Flight in January 1998, after which he worked in the Astronaut Office Crew Systems and Habitability Section.She spent 30 days, 14 hours, and 54 minutes in space on STS-87 in 1997 and STS-107 in 2003.

Kalpana Chawla Death

On the morning of February 1, 2003, as the Space Shuttle was preparing to land at Kennedy Space Center.
Then, during launch, a briefcase-sized piece of insulation broke, damaging the shuttle’s wings, which were protecting it from heat during re-entry.
The hot air inside the shuttle’s wing broke it as it entered the atmosphere.The improvised craft shook and rolled, and within one minute it had hit all of the ship’s crew.
Its shuttle crashed over Texas and Louisiana before collapsing.
The accident was the Space Shuttle program’s second major disaster, following the 1986 Shuttle Challenger explosion.

Kalpana Chawla Awards and Achievement

Kalpana was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the NASA Space Flight Medal, and the NASA Vishisht Seva Medal posthumously.
Following Kalpana’s death in 2003, the Prime Minister of India announced the name of the seasonal satellite after Kalpana, which resulted in the MetSat-1 satellite being named after Kalpana.On September 12, 2002, MetSat-1 was launched.
Meanwhile, the Government of Karnataka established the Kalpana Chawla Award for Young Women Scientists in 2004.
NASA also named a supercomputer after Kalpana Chawla.
