Although he began his career in the 1970s singing straightforward country and western music, he shifted to a more pop-friendly sound in the 1980s, which brought him additional success on both the country and pop charts.

Mickey Gilley was born in Natchez, Mississippi on March 9, 1936 to parents Arthur Fillmore Gilley and Irene. Several years are spent working for Jerry Lee Lewis. As children, the performer shared the stage with Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart. Jerry instructed him and Jimmy in piano. They performed Gospel and boogie-woogie together.

Mickey had two marriages in his lifetime. In 1953, when Geraldine Garrett was only 17 years old, he wed her. The couple divorced in 1961 for unknown reasons. From his first marriage, he has three children named Keith Ray, Michael, and Kathy. On March 06, 2010, Geraldine Garrett died.
