Neeraj Chopra (born 24 December 1997) is the reigning Olympic javelin champion, the silver medalist at the World Championships, and the champion of the Diamond League. He is the first Asian to win Olympic gold in men’s javelin. Chopra, a junior officer in the Indian Army, is India’s first Olympian in track and field.

In addition, he is the first Indian track and field athlete to win the IAAF World U20 Championships, where he set the world under-20 record for the javelin throw with 86.48 metres. Chopra earned gold medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2018 Asian Games, where she also carried the flag.

Neeraj won gold with a throw of 87.58 metres on his second attempt at the Tokyo Olympics of 2020. He is one of just two Indians to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics (the other is Abhinav Bindra). He is also the youngest Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics and the only Indian to win gold in his Olympic debut.

Chopra made his return on 14 June 2022 by setting a new national record of 89.30 metres at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland. On 30 June 2022, just 15 days after breaking his own national record of 89.30m, he achieved 89.94m at the Stockholm Diamond League 2022 in Sweden.

On 23 July 2022, Chopra earned Silver medal with a throw of 88.13m at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, becoming the second Indian to win a medal at World Athletics Championships after Anju Bobby George, who won Bronze medal in Women’s Long Jump at the 2003 World Athletics Championships.

Early life and education

Neeraj Chopra was born in Khandra Panipat, Haryana, to a Ror family. His family is heavily engaged in agriculture and he has two sisters. He graduated from Dayanand Anglo-Vedic College in Chandigarh in 2021, and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, Punjab.

The Indian Army, impressed by Chopra’s performance at the South Asian Games and his future potential, offered him a direct appointment as a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the Rajputana Rifles with the rank of Naib Subedar, a rank not typically granted to athletes, who are typically recruited as non-commissioned officers (NCO).

He accepted the offer and enlisted in the military under the sports quota.

Neeraj Chopra’s first international tournament was the 2013 World Youth Championships in Ukraine, but he won his first international medal, a silver, at the 2014 Youth Olympic Qualification in Bangkok. He was invited to the national camp after surpassing 70 metres in the 2014 senior nationals and 80 metres at the 2015 All India Inter-University Athletics Meet.

At the 2016 South Asian Games, he set the Indian national record of 84.23m, earning him a gold medal. He then won silver at the 2016 Asian Junior Athletics Championships. In July of that year, he established a world junior record and won a second gold medal at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, but just missed the cutoff date for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

His next gold medal came from a throw of 85.23 metres at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships, followed by 86.47 metres on his debut at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. In May of that year, his 87.43-meter throw at the Doha Diamond League set a new national record.

Neeraj Chopra, who debuted at the 2018 Asian Games in August as the flag-bearer for the Indian team and won the gold medal with a stunning 88.06-meter throw, represented India for the first time. This earned him the first javelin throw gold for India in the Asian Games and broke his previous national record.

An elbow ailment in his throwing arm caused him to undergo surgery in Mumbai on May 2, 2019, the day after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifying games began. Five months later, instead of continuing his training with “eternal world record” holder Uwe Hohn, he travelled to Potchefstroom, South Africa, to work with biomechanics expert Klaus Bartonietz.

With a throw of 87.86 metres at the ACNW League Meeting in Potchefstroom in January 2020, he qualified for the forthcoming Tokyo Olympics. A year later, in March 2021, he broke the previous national record with a throw of 88.07 metres, followed by a gold medal win at his first international game of the season in Lisbon, Portugal.

Neeraj Chopra threw 86.65 metres on August 4, 2021, to qualify for the men’s javelin throw final in his Olympic debut for India at the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. He won the gold medal with a throw of 87.58 metres on August 7, 2021, becoming the first Indian Olympic gold champion in athletics and the second individual gold medalist from India.
