The day before the shows were scheduled to debut, on January 20, Adele announced she would be cancelling and rescheduling the shows in a tearful video. She claimed that she contemplated abandoning a plan that didn't feel right to her.

There was simply no soul in it, Adele remarked to Elle. "The setup of the stage was inadequate. It felt very remote from my band and I and lacked intimacy. And perhaps I went too far by providing those things in such a controlled environment."

The first few months after the cancellation were "really, really hard," according to Adele. "I felt ashamed. But because it was such a brave thing to do, it actually helped me feel more confident in myself.

I doubt many people would have done what I did," she added. "I'm very proud of myself for putting my artistic needs first."
