Celebrity actress Cherie Gil has died at the age of 59.

Multi-awarded actress Cherie Gil has died in New York City, her nephew, actor Sid Lucero, confirmed to GMA News on Friday. She was 59.Lucero posted a tribute photo for her aunt with the words “I love you” and “big hug”

Annabelle Rama, the actress' friend, announced Gil's death on her Twitter page yesterday. She chose not to reveal the cause of Gil's death, instead asking for the public's prayers.

She began her acting career at the age of nine and has since appeared in over 100 films, including the controversial "Manila By Night," epic "Oro Plata Mata," and "Sonata," in which she starred as an operatic diva in her declining years.
