Leon Vitali, an actor who worked with Stanley Kubrick, has died.

Leon Vitali, who later became Stanley Kubrick's right-hand man, died Friday in Los Angeles. His family said he died peacefully surrounded by Masha, Max, and Vera. 74-year-old

Masha Vitali, his daughter, said, "Leon was a special, curious man who spread love and warmth wherever he went. His many fans will miss him greatly.

Vitali began his career in the UK, appearing in The Fenn Street Gang and Notorious Woman. His most notable role was in 1975's Barry Lyndon, opposite Ryan O'Neal.

Kubrick was Vitali's defining collaborator. He retired from acting to work with Kubrick behind the scenes. In The Shining, he was credited as "director's assistant."

he helped cast Danny Lloyd as Danny Torrance and Louise and Lisa Burns as the creepy Grady twins. In Eyes Wide Shut, Vitali played Red Cloak.

Tony Zierra's 2017 documentary Filmworker revealed the pair's strange relationship. "I'd work 14, 16-hour shifts, seven days a week," he said (per IndieWire). Not always. Normal."

Since Kubrick's passing, Vitali has acted in films like 2013's Romeo & Juliet and Little Children and In The Bedroom, both directed by Todd Field.

Vitali remained devoted to Kubrick's work and oversaw the restoration of numerous films under the director's direction. The official Kubrick estate Twitter account expressed their condolences to Vitali's family and all who knew and loved him, calling him a "mainstay" in Kubrick's films.
